Believe it or not, all concrete is not created equal! With all the different types of projects and applications that concrete can be used for, there is a wide variety of different concrete mixes that exist.

Often times, homeowners are not educated on this unless they do their own research or are educated on it by a contractor. Information found on the internet isn't always accurate if it's not specific to the region you live in.

Being in the lowcountry of Charleston, SC, we experience a lot of issues with water which can result in excessive ground movement. Given this fact, you'll often see driveways that really aren't that old with excessive weathering and lots of cracking.

We have had a great deal of success with recommending customers in the market for a new driveway to utilize a 4,000 psi mix in lieu of a 3,000 psi mix. The extra strength in this mix not only helps with ground movement, but also provides extra assurance that it will hold up to weight of vehicular traffic. The overall cost of this type of mix is minimal when comparing it to a 3,000 psi mix that competitors would likely use. This higher strength mix is also what is commonly utilized in the construction of public roadways which helps speak to its durability.

For projects like patios and sidewalks that will only ever see light foot traffic, a 3,000 psi mix is more better suited. Some other factors to consider outside of the strength of the concrete is proper preparation of the subgrade. We will dig deeper into this in our next blog!
